May 4, 2025 · Rev. Derek van Gulden · Luke 24:13-35

On a communion Sunday, Rev. Derek van Gulden keeps it brief: Luke's road to Emmaus says it all, and the first communion he took at eighteen changed something he is still figuring out. Pay attention to that moment when you take the bread and the cup.

People of God. Would you pray with me now? Gracious and holy God, this morning I ask you to move the words of my mouth and the meditation of all our hearts by your love, and help me this day not to be the instrument of my own or anyone else's oppression, but an instrument of peace. And every step and every breath and every moment of our days. Amen.

Known in the breaking of the bread. There's really not much I can say those words in Scripture from Luke for me. Say it all. The first time I took communion, which I've shared probably way too many times with all of you, something changed drastically in me. I was eighteen and I have spent the rest of my life. Trying to figure out what that means. And I hope that when you take communion, whether it's today or tomorrow or whenever, again. You pay attention to that moment when you take the bread and the cup and just be aware what's going on in that moment. Amen.
